Triple Threat (Part 2)

In LOTK, we first encounter Hal and his entourage at the end of Chapter One. Hal is accompanied by two humans whose names—Byron and Dayna—aren’t revealed until Book Four. These two remain at Hal’s side from the beginning and reemerge in LOTKR.

Byron’s name means fire, flame, or burning. Fitting, because Byron—called Bull—embodies the lust of the flesh. His desire for Hawk burns openly, consuming him until it finally twists him into a minotaur: half man, half beast, driven entirely by appetite.

Dayna—Hawk—represents the lust of the eyes. Her name means “a collection of the best and most beautiful,” a description she would embrace without hesitation. Her obsession with her own appearance becomes her undoing, warping her into a harpy: a beautiful face (for a time) wrapped around a corrupted nature, a warning carried on wings.

And finally, Hal. His name means hero or warrior, yet he embodies the opposite. He believes he’s untouchable, unstoppable, and immune to consequence. He represents the pride of life—pride that convinces people they won’t fall. Hal eventually hardens, inside and out, until he becomes… well, you’ll have to keep reading. Cold. Rigid. Perched above everyone else.

God has a plan for each of us. We are called to be a flame (the light of the world), beautiful (imitators of Christ), and a hero (more than conquerors). Sin will warp us into a monster we were never created to become—and even more so as we move away from Christ.

These characters are also reflected in the world. Hal is the God‑hating systems that send out their workers—some politicians included. Bull is the businessman burning with lust for money and women. Hawk is the female artist who craves attention, even selling her own body to get it.

Do not imitate these people. They are blemishes on society. They behave like beasts; they love wickedness and will one day face destruction (2 Peter 2:10–15).

“For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.”
