Nara’s story isn’t uncommon. Maybe we, like her, began our journey in joy. Then one day, an unexpected crisis erupted in our church or family. We suddenly found ourselves separated from the Body and facing a barrage of trials, dangers, and battles. We fought on, and yes, there was growth—but we desperately wanted to return home.
Maybe you’re a missionary, an evangelist, or God has called you away from your comforts. In our times of absence from the Church, or in seasons of displacement, we must not fall into the temptations of the world. Continue to read your Bible, study the commentaries, and pray.
1 Corinthians chapter 12 reminds us that we have been blessed with different gifts and ministries from God. Our gifts still matter even when we are separated from the Body. Take heart—the Spirit will not withdraw them because of our circumstances.
Although separated, we are still one Body. The hand cannot say to the foot, “I don’t need you.” The eye cannot dismiss the ear. Even the weaker parts are important. We were designed to help one another for the mutual benefit of the Church. Earnestly seek the gifts, and the most excellent way—love.
As Christians we strive to love—even our enemies. Our hearts should never grow calloused from helping others, but our touch should remain soothing. Although gentle, we must be quick to correct and edify those around us to build one another up in love.
Yet despite all our strengths, we can become weakened by prolonged separation from the Church. During these times, our compassion can fade, discernment can dull, and even our gifts can change.
Even so, Christ’s death was not in vain. Through His sacrifice on the cross, we can receive forgiveness and Salvation from the consequences of our sin—which is Hell, eternal separation from God. Salvation restores us to God, and through Reconciliation and Justification we are brought back into relationship with Him and declared righteous in His sight.
This progression is found in the book of Romans and reflected in some characters and the titles of the LOTK series. Ultimately, we have been rescued by Christ and called to advance the Kingdom of Heaven. Let’s boldly march forward as one Body with the weapons of righteousness firmly within our grasp (2 Corinthians 6:7).
"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go."
